shakim’s STORY:

Shakim has very little memory of living with his parents before both of them died. His grandmother was able to adopt him but having too many grandchildren to care for, she could not provide Shakim with basic necessities like clothes and enough food to eat each day. She was so poor that there was no chance of being able to pay for an education. Shakim began a street vending business as a small child selling boiled eggs in town to try and make money to help take care of his grandmother and all of the grandchildren living with them. One day Shakim lost the money he had made and came home after a long day of selling boiled eggs empty-handed. After being brutally punished and chased away from home, Shakim began his life on the streets. He described facing rejection, abuse, hunger, and thirst every day. He ate food from trash bins or sold scrap metal for a very small amount of food.

Our staff identified Shakim as a young and vulnerable boy and were excited to give him the opportunity to come live at the SGU village and attend SGU Primary School. Shakim is so grateful that he lives in a home that is safe where he always has plenty of food to eat. He is eager to learn and is thriving in his new school!
