What is Child Sponsorship?

When you sponsor a child through Saving Grace in Uganda, you are doing more than just helping provide a child with food, shelter and education. You are showing that child that though you are thousands of miles away, you care for them. You love them and you want them to have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. The money you give each month to sponsor a child takes care of some of his or her basic needs and also provides them with the opportunity to receive an education at Saving Grace Primary School, advocacy, life skills training, counseling, and most importantly the chance to know Jesus Christ and how He can transform their life. Once the child has graduated from our program, they will return to live in the community where they can be a part of transforming Uganda and helping to end street life. We would love for you to be a part of changing the lives of these children and ultimately ending the cycle of poverty in Uganda.

Sponsorship success stories:

F.A.Q.

HOW DO I SPONSOR A CHILD?
Visit our Children page and read the stories of all the children at Saving Grace. Maybe one of their stories resonates with you. Maybe you can connect with some of their experiences. Next, choose who you’d like to sponsor (if you can’t choose just one, you can sponsor as many children as you’d like!). You will be taken to our donation page where you can indicate who you are sponsoring and enter your information to begin this life-giving partnership.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO SPONSOR A CHILD?
There are two cost options for sponsoring a child: the $30 partnership level and the $150 comprehensive level. If you choose the $30 option, you will be partnering with others to care for the needs of that child. If you choose the $150 option, you will be covering all routine expenses for that child and new supporters will be encouraged to sponsor a different child. Both options bring about huge life change for our children!

WHERE EXACTLY DOES SPONSORSHIP MONEY GO?
100% of the money you give goes to supporting our children in Uganda. Sponsorship money goes into our general fund, and goes toward programs that directly benefit all of the children on the sponsorship page. The children that Saving Grace takes in have no one else to care for them. We are committed to each of them until they are ready to move out and live on their own and even after that, we are their family. As you might realize, it takes more than $30 per month to fully care for a child. Although it varies based on age, we estimate that an average of $150 is needed per child for food, clothes, school uniform/supplies/fees, a housemother, medical care, etc. Some children contract diseases such as tuberculosis or malaria that cost additional funds to treat. Our mission includes this huge ongoing responsibility to provide what is needed for a rescued street child to have an opportunity to succeed in life, serve God and their community. Every time a child is sponsored it helps us to provide better care and rescue more children from street life.

WHY SHOULD I SPONSOR A CHILD?
We believe that God calls us to look after orphans (James 1:27). Sponsoring a child is a tangible way to care for these orphans in Uganda. We also believe deeply in building relationships (Heb. 10:24-25). Through child sponsorship you are not just giving money to a child, you are building a relationship with them. You are letting them know that they are not forgotten and somebody cares for them.

HOW LONG IS MY SPONSORSHIP COMMITMENT?
Your commitment can be as long as you want. As your child finishes their education and is able to support themselves, we will suggest you transfer to another child that needs a sponsor. We generally recommend sponsoring a child for at least one year but we understand if you are unable. We encourage you to continue to pray for all the children at Saving Grace even if you can’t be a sponsor.

WILL I GET TO BE IN CONTACT WITH THE CHILD I SPONSOR?
Yes! We are in frequent communication with the staff in Uganda via email and Skype. This makes receiving updates, as well as sending messages (text, audio, video) to your sponsored child relatively easy. Your child will also be able to send messages back on a semi-regular basis via letter writing. Unfortunately sending mail to and from northern Uganda is very difficult due to high costs and no guarantee it will even make it, but we do have a scanner so when a child writes a letter it is scanned and emailed to their sponsor.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MEET MY CHILD?
We're so glad you asked! We have had multiple people travel with us to Saving Grace in Uganda and meet the child they have been sponsoring and praying for for years. It is truly a beautiful thing! Head over to our Trip Info page to learn more about going to Uganda with us.

WHY DO MANY CHILD HAVE THE SAME LAST NAME?
Great question. Names work differently in Uganda. The children you see with the same “last names” are usually not blood related. They are actually surnames and are given by the child’s parents when they are born. Each surname has a different meaning. Some are as simple as meaning “first born” while others mean “blessed” or “gift from God.” We do have some children that are related but they actually have different surnames.
