ivan's STORY:

When he was just 6 years old Ivan’s parents died of AIDS. With no one to care for him, he turned to the dangerous streets of Lira to survive. Street life was immensely difficult for Ivan. He became quickly became addicted to cigarettes and involved in gangs. He ate out of the garbage to try and sustain himself and frequently suffered from typhoid fever malaria and even contracted tuberculosis. After living on the streets for two tumultuous years, Uncle Fred chose Ivan to be a part of the Saving Grace program due to his critical condition.

Ivan now has been completely healed from all sickness and addiction. He is known around the village for his dancing skills and leads the children in choreographing new dances for school and church. He loves doing puzzles and serves by drumming during daily worship time. He is very quiet and independent, but also thoughtful and sensitive. In 2016 Phillips, along with Ivan Otwal, won a Northern Uganda mathematics competition and were honored at a conference in the capital city of Kampala. Ivan has a smile that can light up a room and has dreams of becoming an accountant one day.
