charles' STORY:

Charles was born into a Ugandan Internal Displacement Camp, which were refugee camps protected by the army during the Joseph Kony's civil war. Since there was no one to care for him and not enough food, he turned to the streets. While living on the streets, Charles had chronic typhoid fever and malaria. Exposed to drugs often, he became addicted to marijuana and sniffing glue at age 6. After two years of living on the streets, Uncle Fred brought Charles to live at the Saving Grace Village. When he was first rescued he was very disobedient because he was so used to the rugged life he lived on the streets. Charles often had nightmares because of the trauma he had experienced.

After several years being a part of Saving Grace in Uganda, Charles lives a completely transformed life. He is quiet, yet confident and always ready to greet everyone with a smile. Despite his small stature, he is a gifted soccer player and enjoys playing defense. The Saving Grace team has also nicknamed him "The Professor" because he is a deep thinker and does very well in school. Charles dreams of becoming a doctor because he loves helping people, and we fully expect him to succeed!
